Exit Glacier Road Closed Due to Flooding
For the second time in two years, Kenai Fjords National Park has closed the park portion of the Exit Glacier Road to vehicle traffic due to flooding conditions along Exit Glacier Creek. The morning flood conditions did not coincide with any high water on the Resurrection River as one would expect. It was noted that a one inch rainfall event was recorded at the Harding Icefield Remote Automated Weather Station (RAWS) approximately 12 hours earlier.

A vehicle barricade is in place at the Resurrection River Bridge. All park staff and park housing has been evacuated and relocated to temporary housing in Seward. Approximately 400 feet of road is covered by 1-5 inches of road and the road is actively being undercut. At this time visitors can continue to access the Exit Glacier area by foot but must exercise caution.

A second one inch rainfall event was recorded Sunday afternoon and it may be several days before the damage to the road can be fully assessed.

Road to Exit Glacier Remains Closed Due to Flooding
The road to Exit Glacier remains closed at the Resurrection River Bridge as of 9:00 a.m. today. There is still approximately 4-6 inches of water flowing across the roadway. Until the water subsides, it will be difficult to assess road damage and determine if the road is safe for vehicle traffic.

Visitors should proceed with caution if walking through the flooded area to access Exit Glacier. Parking is limited at the Resurrection River Trailhead.

The park maintains an automated phone line, which provides periodic updates on the status of the road to Exit Glacier. Please access the automated line at (907) 422-0573 or call Kenai Fjords National Park’s Public Information Officer at (907) 422-0530.
