Default the spammers are winning, tonight

4 new spams in the past hour, all not too different from this one:

    http://forums.outdoorsdirectory.com/...-in-our-online

    From 3 different spammers.

The common thread is that none of them are reportable using the "!" button.

I notified Brian of the first three, but enough is enough; you guys are going to have a cleanup effort to do after you straighten out the actual problem. Likely a database re-index or the like needs to happen.

    Question stranger and stranger

Here's the view I now see of this site in firefox/windoze:

    Attachment 37599

Doesn't this look like an ancient version of this same web site/forum????? Somethings awry here.

I've fixed it. It was a bug that vbulletin introduced in the latest version. I've fixed it. More details here:

Looks like "Sir Nick" (different forum, from link above) found that bug long before me; good him and those that are fixing it, including you fixing it here, Man1c.

I just tested that from this end, here on this forum. Looks good. Well done.

Seems like an inordinate amount of spammers getting through recently. Has something changed again with a recent software update?

They are like hemorrhoids. Sometimes gone, sometimes there, sometimes a real pain in the butt.

Nope. Software can only keep spam out that is driven by computer programs, but the spammers we're getting are real people who go through the same registration process as everyone else. The only option there is to require manual verification before someone makes their first post, but we don't have that kind of manpower or time, and it also discourages first-time visitors who might come here on a whim their first time but who may become valued parts of the community after that first post or two. At this point, all we can do is knock 'em down when we see them. Heck, with daveinthebush and kingfisherktn on the job, I barely get to notch any kills for myself as of late.

As I type this there's a whole stack of 'em waiting to be nuked, again. What's with the restriction that we can only report one every 60 seconds?

I shoot em down as fast as I can. I am usually up at 3 a.m. your time right now so it helps. My only problem is when they post over 50 posts. I have found an easier way to sneak around it but being able to do 87 posts at one time would help.

Yeah I agree Dave. I have been hitting atleast 40-50 per night the last few nights. I usually check the box that asks if I want to delete all of their post and then I ban them for eternity right away. They come back again, but I still try to catch them right away.

You can usually spot them by their name in the "who's online" section long before they post. For some reason many of them hang out in the Hunting Advertising thread for quite a while before starting to post. You could catch a whole lot of their posts long before they happen if there was a way to jam the obvious ones before they ever get started. There's one there right now, just waiting for whatever to get started.

Haven't gone to their profiles to confirm yet, but it looks like there are seven of them there right now, waiting to get started.

I agree, 10 seconds would be more like it.

They're easy to pick out of the members list too. There's a whole lot of 'em who don't post to the forums but have homepages linked to porn or advertising sites. For example, the homepage link of this one is a porn site: ! aaRopMeeple

It no longer seems to do any good to report them, either. I bet I've reported close to a couple dozen posts in the last two days and they're all still there.

Think I'll take a break from my surveillance services if it doesn't do any good. Someone else's turn to be a good citizen of the site.

Some changes to the way people register took place yesterday. Also all the people from the Netherlands I think got booted. There are some residual accounts out there that will need to be cleaned up. I banned 3-4 people today that registered last week. So the problem is known and Michael is working on it with Icebear.

I hear you; I've discontinued reporting also and for the same reason.

They'll get a handle on it at some point. I noticed that this site has actually shut down its online registrations, and quite likely most all registrations (it seems unlikely that a non member would be able to locate member Icebear). See on this page the text that's been added to the random question entry:
