    Default Unit23 hunting

Hello all, Getting ready to send for my hunting lic. & Caribou tag. I will be hunting in unit 23 the middle of September. Are there any wolfs and Black bear in the area? Don't want to spend the extra money if no wolfs or bear......... Thanks Jim

    Depends on where our hunting.
Unit 23 is larger than Indiana in sq. Miles.

There Mountains, rolling tundra, Trees, No trees, rivers, ocean, ect.

Do you know where your gonna go, what drainage?

We caught a nice Bull this morning on the soutern end of Baldwin Pennesula,Kobuk lake side, as single Bulls are always wandering about, but alotta guys try to get infront of big herds that are comming from the North in Sept. There are not many trees up North of the Noatak drainage.

Black Bears like trees, Wolf pelts are not prime untill December.

the simple answer is yes - there are both black bears and wolves present in Unit 23.
Suggest you contact your outfitter/transporter to see if there has been sucess in the area you will be in.

Im sure that small Caribou band you bumped into at Coffee point the other day moved East to my side of the Pennensula, near Aakluk lake side.
The animals look healthy. The fat one we caught this morning was 'average' when we watched the rest, all very NICE Tastes great!
Fact is , I havent seen any limping, scabbed, or 'crazy'(misquitos) Caribou this summer, and quite a few Calfs, so were gonna be over our necks in Caribou this fall I think.
~~LOL!!~~ You can Never know....~~LOL!!~~But its looking good!
