Default Out of Whittier this weekend?

Well for PWS the weather went from [great] to [ok not to bad] to [think Ill stay home and mow the grass and maybe go to the air show]. Spent 3 weekends this summer hold up in bays for extended periods waiting for weather to pass, weve had enough of that. I know, it could change at the last min...one can only hope.

Thats not so bad when you look at the Cape Suckling to Gore Point forcast. It was 4, then 7 and now 12ft. I was going to run over from Seward, but not it seems more prudent to trailer to Whittier and run down in good old protected PWS. I will be out there, but I will skip the open water part this time.

The forecast has been changing a lot. I want to go out Saturday, wanted to make a run across some open water, but may have to change my plans a bit, hopefully the forecast will turn for the better.

Yea, I checked it out this morning also. Looks better and if we were desperate we’d go but have made plans in town for the weekend. The Silvers should be in closer next weekend and perhaps the sun will show its face. If all we did was stay on the boat and fish than the forecast sea state would be the only consideration, hopefully August will offer more sunny days and the chance to hike a couple of Peaks around the sound. Regardless of the weather we will most likely be out next weekend; summer is short and we can only stand to miss one weekend of boating in a row.

So much for the forecast. The seas were pretty flat this weekend all over. We came back from Fox Farm Bay today with flat seas all the way. Two days of limits of silvers and halibut, the biggest halibut being 65lbs and all the rest over 20lbs. The silvers where big and easy almost all males. I hope you made it out. It was a great weekend, and I am glad to be back in PWS after a month or so in Seward. Hopefully we will get some sunny days in the sound before the snow flies.

You realize a two day limit of silvers in PWS is the same as a one day limit. 3 a day and 3 in possession unless your in a Terminal harvest area. I'm sure that's what you meant, just wouldn't want anyone to assume you were violating.

Yep, weather (seas) turned out to be nice after all. We got our limit of silvers (3 each) for the weekend. Forgot to take the regs with me so played it safe by assuming 3/day, 3 in possession just in case. Guess that turned out to be correct. Used to be you could have 6 if you were from Pigot Point on into Whittier. Then I think a couple of years ago they moved that mark to way in close to Whittier.
For us, we got our silvers with the downriggers set at 80. Pinks seemed to be shallower. The silvers were all really big and we lost some gear due to broken lines. Got an octopus in the shrimp pot. Grilled one tentacle after tenderizing it (beating the hell out of it) and it was good. Boiled another one and the flavor was good but man was it chewy.

Yes, you are correct about the posession limits for silvers. I have a freezer amd a vacuum sealer on board so I can process them and freeze them at night. By morning they are forzen hard, and it is my understanding that they then do not count towards my posession limit.

Nice, reason #451 on why I need a bigger boat.

Yea, rub it in. I did however get some necessary things done around the house and serviced the tow vehicle. Well be back out next weekend with a vengeance; the weather will have to be really snotty to keep us in port.

Or it could have been like the trip I took a couple weeks back. We ran way out towards Montague in glass calm waters, but the fishing was spotty. I figured no big deal, we'd fish hard the next day. We anchored up in disk island, it started raining that night, and the wind had picked up in the morning. It took forever to get to the shrimp pots I dropped on the E side of Knight due to the 2-4' seas, and I rapped the line around the prop while pulling them, which resulted in loosing the pots Then we had a long slog back to port in the snot.

Glad we got out for the trip, but my boat just isn't big enough or well appointed to make those conditions anything but something to be avoided.
