Default Anybody floated the Gulkana recently? (Paxson to Sourdough)

We're floating it a week from tomorrow, and was curious of the current river conditions or if there are any logjams to look out for.
    Thanks...

Default Hope this is not late

Just got off it last night and just made it home. Snow down to about 2800ft on Sat with temps about 11:00AM at 38 degrees. Snowed up high on Sunday as well :-) Yes it was not fun on Sat we waited a day and caught a ride through the lake at 1:30PM weather broke just a little but only around the lake. Lots of rain happening in and around Paxson on Tues night as well.

The water is up about 16 inches give or take some water after the Middle Fork comes in. Fishing was fair enough lots of complicated areas are under water i.e. not alot of rock bouncing and no dragging.

Falls was up all rocks were under water for the most park some great 4ft standing waves and the last drop was deeper than normal.

Again did not seem to bother the fishing much and never hard stuck a rock. On the GPS current in some loactions hit 10 MPH little above average for those sections.

Looks like it may have started to break up today on the Fairbanks side. IMO the water will stay high for at least three more days from what was happing up until last night.

Last day on the River wind blew hard gust in the 40 MPH range not fun oaring.

No King fishing what so ever and very little red fishing.

Hope the data helps! Still a great trip! Only saw one other rafting guru on the river in 4 days. All camp sites were open. If the weather does not break and they close Kings this weekend will be a great float!

Thanks BM. That's exactly what I was looking for.
We're headed there after work next Wednesday, and we're planning on a slow float through the weekend. I'll report back if the salmon fishing has picked up by then. Thanks again for the update.

How long does it take you to float it and Does Sourdough have a shuttle back to your car at Paxon Lake. I'd like to float this with alot of stops for Bows or Reds.

Default Yes Todd does offer the service

sourdough is doing spots of 55 bucks which is a smoken deal considering it saves about 3 hours of your time not to mention Todd is a great person.

You can float the entire thing if the water is normal in two days two very long days more of a three day float if your not working 18 hour days. Most people who fish it take 4 -5 days. It could be extended to 5-6 easy if you like to fish hard and camp well.

    Have fun! Best wishes!
