    Default Best backcountry skis

    Hi all,

I'm looking to purchase my first backcountry x-country skis. I'd like something that can fit in track-set trails but also function on snowmachine trails, frozen lakes, powder, etc.

How wide is too wide for track sets? How narrow is too narrow for decent out-of-track performance?

Also, will my old NNN bindings and boots be OK? Or do I need higher boots and beefier bindings?

Are you in Anchorage, Aaron? If so, probably the best thing you could do is go talk to the folks at AMH and Barneys - go to both, as its nice to get a variety of opinions and they carry some different gear. The backcountry skiing I do is of the up and down variety, so I'm not going to be much help on the cross country aspect - but the guys at the above shops are great.

That being said, I'm guessing that you're going to need some different boots. I've gone off the trail with my skate skis, and my ankles were wanting something different!
