Little Su Classic July 3rd!
It's time again for the Little Su Classic.
This year's fourth running of the Little Su Classic has some changes. Although there will still be canoe, raft, and kayak race categories, the main emphasis is on cleaning up the Little Susitna River. Not only is the Little Su home to all five species of Pacific Salmon, but it also provides recreational opportunities for all of South Central Alaska.
This popularity comes at a price, however. Spring flooding leaves debris in the river bed, and unthinking neighbors allow their trash to find it's way into the water.
Susitna Rotary Club, with the help of community minded organizations and individuals, will be out cleaning the river on July 3. We will meet at the Schrock Rd. bridge at 8am and start floating the river, picking up trash. There will be coffee and donuts for everyone at the launch, and a chance to sign up for fun and games. Along the way we will be stopping along gravel bars to dump our trash at pick-up stations, enjoy a frosty cold beverage, or try our luck at a poker hand. Advance registration is only $20 per person and includes a poker hand, picnic BBQ, prize drawings, and a commemorative T-shirt. Registration is also available the morning of the event for $25. All proceeds will be used for community service projects in the Susitna River drainage.
At the finish line at the Parks Highway bridge in Houston, there will be a BBQ picnic, live music, and awards ceremony. Trophies will be awarded for the fastest finishers in the raft, kayak, and canoe categories. Prizes will be awarded for the collection of the most trash along the route.
Come out and join us as we clean up the Little Susitna River, on July 3rd at 8am at the Schrock Rd. bridge, or join us starting at 2pm at the Little Susitna River bridge on the Parks Highway in Houston. Registration is available at the Houston Chamber building at mile 57.3 Parks Highway, by calling Jack Timm at 715-7671, or on-line at Susitna Rotary on Facebook.
