    Default Tanner Crab Pots

What and where is the best place to purchase tanner crab pots(southcentral area)? Also will tanner crab pots fish for king crab as well if I decide to try my luck in PWS this winter? I'm considering buying them from Potbuilder but I've seen the pyramid shape with a large opening at the top and just curious what everybody is using.

    Thanks

I fished one of Steves crab pots last year for tanners and did more than well with it. Stores nice and catches crab. I highly recommend it.

    Default Get one

Get one of those pyramid shaped pots. They work for both.

If you're in Homer they have 3' and 4' ones at the Gear Shed.

Did you notice that my tanner pots looks like scaled down king crab pots?

    Default Dololdsons

My favorite are the pots at Donoldsons in Anchorage. They are lighter than the ones at the Gear Shed which is much easier for my ace puller. They definately fish well, are stackable like their shrimp pots... and will also fit Kings.

Another vote for Pot Builders crab pots. Fished great and ace line hauler handled it without a problem.

Just for the record the gear shed makes 2 sizes of pots a 4x4 and a 3x3 for those that have smaller pullers. I am going to try the 3x3's this year.
I think they all work pretty good. Just make sure and get the ones suggested here.
My neighbor tried those crappy Danielson wire pots that sell really cheaply. He had bad results with those.
It is hard to go wrong with any of the made in Alaska pots.
If you go to the gear shed they also have some Small king crab pots that get used through the ice in Norton sound. The guy who builds them told me they were getting up to 20 crabs from each pot. I guess they get their legs stuck in the webbing while going after the bait and don't actually climb in the pot at all.

A customer emailed me this picture of one of my tanner pots with a few crab in it, its sitting on his swim step and you have to remember that my pots have 2 tunnels in them(like a king crab pot) only one is showing because the other is buried under the crabs in the pot.

Default When can we catch tanners out of Homer

When can we drop crab traps/pots out of Homer. What is the best time of the year to do this. Do the crab taste better in the winter. And how deep of water do we set the pots in.

Check the regs it opens July 15th. The best time of year is when the season is open although later on you will find they are more full.
Set your pots in water deeper than 300'. You will need at least 600' of line per pot so be sure you have enough line.
