Default Finding a place to claim?

I have a couple questions. Is there anywhere where I can find maps on mining claims, like what is claimed, what isn't, and where I can make a claim if I wanted to. Mainly from Healy to the Brooks range. I want to find somewhere that I can go camp on and do some panning and sluicing, I am just looking for something recreational. I don't mind hiking in a few miles. I went to the BLM and DNR offices and they weren't much help. I'm not looking to get rich, just to have some fun. Thanks.

Very good question you have, and believe it or not its asked often.

These are two of the main sources for online information. One is State and one is Federal. Unfortunately areas that are easily accessable with gold are nearly always claimed up, but nine times out of ten are never mined, so you wouldnt know standing there. The online mappers can be tough to navigate through. I might suggest if you have specific questions to go back into the public information offices you have already visited and ask. Remember, they probably get a dozen people a day asking those same questions you already did, especially with the price of gold these days. You could try the old fashioned contacting current claim owners for permission to do some panning. That might be easier than staking a claim of your own.

Here is another forum thats free, you might find information there. There are also several recreational panning sites around the state. Near you its on the Steese Highway by the Pedro Monument. Also I think you can work on Nome Creek in the White Mountains area. You might want to research that.

Thanks for the info. I tried that mapper website, it's kinda tough to navigate. At DNR and BLM I was told that if I found some where I want to claim to come in. I told them I didn't want to pay for a trip up north and then find out that I was on someones claim or somewhere I wasn't supposed to be.

Are you wanting a mining enterprise, or a remote retreat.....? You might look into the old T&M sites, OTE sites, Remote patented 5 ac. Homesites.

If you are looking for information on areas/streams and what mining history they have, try this website.

    http://ardf.wr.usgs.gov/quadmap.html

This website is great for the same information as above but might be easier for you find specific areas, although the last time I tried to research there I couldnt get things to load, kept asking for login, tried to join, but it wouldnt work. Maybe you will have better luck.

That should keep you busy for a while.

yeah if ur talking about alaska mapper its pretty tricky to get used to at first, i ran some circles around on there before and even had to ask dnr a couple help questions, but you will get it eventually, you have to put on the right kind of maps to show whats going on and what not and if you really wanna find out about the claim you can look it up by mcl number somewhere else, been a while since i've played with it though, if you want gold there's lots of it out in the ocean and west beach in nome i think is going to be recreational soon also :D
