Thread: My sons first bear

  1. #1

    Default My sons first bear

I took my son out to the bait station on Friday. We had 1 small bear come in and eat a little while, then a larger bear came by and very nervously left and did not return. The next day we went in around 4:30 pm and I got him all settled in the stand. While I was walking over to the barrel to put in more bait, I noticed on top of the hill about 60 yds behind the barrel was 2 bears watching me. Not knowing exactly what to do I just turned around w/ the bait still in my backpack. I climbed the stand and told him there were 2, most likely from the previous evening.

The smaller bear came in about 15 minutes later and ate then left. I told him to get ready that the bigger one would be behind. Shortly after, the larger one came in and laid down. After what seemed to be an eternity he finally shot. "I got Him". I told him to be quite for a moment and after it let out 3-4 death moans it was all over.

    Default Hunting area....

We were in unit 7. W/ him being 9 this goes on my tag. However, we only take 2 bears a year to try to keep them coming in the next year. The taxidermist said it was somewhere between 5 1/2' - 5 3/4'.

    Default Thank you from him...

He asked me to write to tell each of you thanks for the nice words. The rifle is a Mdl 7 7mm-08. He was shooting 140gr Cor-lokt. It ran about 7 yds.

Yes, I put an HS Precision stock on it. The other one was ok, but I got a good deal on this one.
