Default where to buy 12 gauge slugs!!

Can anyone share some web sites or local stores who sell big load ammo.
    Looking for good bear protection.

    Default Most

Most stores that carry ammunition will have slugs. Sportsman Warehouse, Walmart, Great Northern Guns.....

I'd recommend either using Brennekes or better yet Dixie Slugs. Most other slugs are made of soft lead and won't get as good penetration. You can get Brennekes at Great Northern, SW doesn't have them. Dixie Slugs have to be purchased online directly from the company. Forget about any buckshot or birdshot theories for big bears.

I don't know anything about the Dixies other than what I've read.

I can tell you from experience that none of the bears I've shot with Brennekes have gotten up after being smacked with one.
    Now what ?

The first time I shot Brennekes was immediately after the last time I loaded any other type of slug in my shotgun. I would give away the few remaining Foster's-type I have, but I feel a moral responsiblity to my fellow humans.

Brenneke USA lists only one AK dealer on their web site Brenneke USA:

    Bear Allen
    8263 Richardson Highway
    Salcha Alaska 99714

I would be surprised if they are the only dealer in the state.

If you're shooting a smoothbore, you will want the Brenneke Black Magic Magnum 12 / 3" for your purpose here. As you can tell below, it will not be fun at the range practicing, but it will instill confidence in the shell you're using:

    Weight: 1 3/8 oz.
    Product code: 120 27 26
    Symbol: SL-123BMM
    Barrel: all types
    Range: up to 100 yards
    Game: large / dangerous

Original BRENNEKE “Black Magic” Slug with newly developed unique, patented B.E.T. wad
    PowerWad results in greater accuracy
tremendous knockdown power up to 100 yards
life insurance against dangerous big game and predators at close range
new, specially developed CleanSpeed™ Coating reduces lead fouling inside the barrel, and to zero at the muzzle
one of the heaviest slugs on the market (600 grains / 1 3/8 oz)
very accurate: 2” groups at 50 yards and 3” groups at 100 yards with smoothbore barrels

Distance (yards) Velocity (feet/sec.) Energy (ft. lbs.) Bullet path (inch)
    Muzzle 1502 3014 - 2.0
    25 1295 2241 + 0.4
    50 1136 1724 + 1.6
    75 1030 1418 + 1.0
    100 955 1219 - 1.5.

Northern Security's on Old Seward carries them, I believe they are 7.00 dollars for 5 and they are by far my number one choice!

    Talking Dixie

The Dixie's really impress me as I have 10 of them sitting next to the keyboard and a sample slug. I was sent the 600 grain 3" mags. (2,648 ft. lb.) for an imp. cyl. shotgun and some testing this spring.

For the rifled barrel shooter they offer a 730 grain slug at 3176 ft. lbs.

I am a fan of the Brenneke's but I am also a fan of a better mouse trap. I have been shooting slugs for 41 years and the Dixies look great.

These are the Predator II, Brenneke and a Foster

Default sounds like I'm going with Brenneke!

Thanks for all the good info. Lets hope see less bears this summer as I did last but I won't count on it.

I never had to shoot a "Big" bear. I've shot a fair number of "Large" blacks though. I shot a 58" Bull Moose in the chest, facing me, at about 35 yards. The Dixie Slug broke his right hip.........

Found my last couple of boxes of Brennekes at the Eagle River Walmart last fall.
