    Default Whittier kayaking

Thinking about doing an unguided day trip out of whittier around June 20th. My tentative plan is to launch out of whittier (smittys cove?) and paddle around passage canal, possibly to shotgun cove or poe bay. Does this sound like a worthwhile trip. I'm very unfamiliar with this area.Kind of on a budget and I have limited time do do this. Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

    Thumbs up

Sounds like good plan & very doable on a budget... hopefully weather/water conditions are good for day you happen to pick.

Thumbs up Smitty's Cove to Shotgun Cove (or Decision Point)

It is one of my favorite day trips.

Weather permitting, you should paddle all the way into the end of Shotgun Cove and come back to Smitty. If you start early, you could paddle to Decision Point and back too. Highly recommended.

Be sure to stop in the Harbor Master's office and pay your parking + kayak launching fees $10 + $10. Whittier police will leave a nice bill on your windshield if you don't.

Here are a couple of links to help with your trip prep.

Consider zipping across to the north side of Passage Canal from Whittier. There is a large kittiwake rookery located on the cliffs, and it's pretty impressive from the water.

    Default Awesome trip

Just wanted to follow up. Just got to take this trip from Whittier to Shotgun cove yesterday. 65 - 70 degrees, sunny, calm water. Saw an Orca. Thanks for the input on this trip. Also thanks to Perry with PWS Kayaking. Very professional and knowledgaeble.
