Are you talking about the one in Cooper Landing?
Do you know if the area you are thinking abouit is part of a private mining claim? This is vital info to know.
I have not metal detected on any Quartz creek. I will say you need to look up the mining history if posssible to see what size gold they got there historically. If all they got was flakes/fines it might be wiser to go elsewhere but if they reported getting nuggets it may be worth it.
As always some areas have little to no info.
Let me know witch Quartz creek and I may know some people who would know about the gold size there or could look it up in one of my books.

That area is pretty much claimed up as far as Devil's pass.

Crow creek in Girdwood still produces for some guys. Read Steves mining journal at http://www.akmining.com.
Cost is $20 a day though. A lot cheaper than gaines creek or moore creek.
Pick up a copy of "the gold miners guide to easy pickings in Alaska" from the above site or try to find a copy of Ron Wendts "where to prospect for gold without getting shot" This second one is out of print and may be hard to find.
All kinds of info on where to go that is open and what to expect to find once there.
Thats the best I can do for now. I don't assume anyone would be forthcoming with anyplace public that is real good. Buy a book and go exploring for yourself.
    Good Luck!
