    Default Quartz\Birch Lake Conditions

Does anyony know if the ice is off Quartz or Birch lake yet? Thanks.

Quartz is 100% ice free (Guy next to me caught two on salmon eggs, I caught nothing on shrimp and flys).

Birch was quite a bit open when I drove by (did not fish there)

The weather was perfect the company perfect the fishing was almost perfect. I saw for the 1st time Rainbow Trout spawning in a lake (Schooled up). There where Rainbows everywhere you looked. They had only one thing on there mind and that was not eating..............They where getting there freak on. We managed to catch a few and have a little fun to all in all it was a great day.

Sweet...I heard about the "Schooling Up." That would drive me crazy to see a bunch of fish and not get them to bite, but I guess thats fishing for you. Did you take any pics of them schooled up like that?

    Fish on!
You know your not catching any fish when you start talking about the weather...

Yes you can flyfish from the shore. Yesterday I saw 3 people fishing when we left on the boat, and about 10-14 fishing when we got back. When we came back I noticed lots of fish around the boat launch, including a few the went +20 and 1 huge beast that had to have been over 25 for sure. I saw most using bait and bobber...I think the fish have seen everything once and most things twice since the ice melted...good luck if your fishing from the shore near the boat launches. I bet its tough going getting them to hit anything. just seeing the sizes of some of those rainbows makes me want to go back...I am starting to get sick as I write this...

went last nite, windy as all get out till 9ish pm and things got good...saw one really nice one caught at the launch when I showed up, guy soaking eggs. I landed two that measured out right between 25 and 26"es almost cookie cutter fish. Got a pic of one on the phone before it died, now if I can only figure out how to get them to a computer lol.

not LOTS of fish though, actually pretty dismal compared to a few years ago. Still fun, one of the trips I really look forward to every year.

Oh and I'm dragging ***** today at work shew....forgot I had to get up at 4 and pull 12's till sat LOL.

I think there are more big lake rainbows near Fairbanks...than the Anchorage area lakes...Smiley caught that last night at the boat ramp. I will save a few to catch instead of those dinkers down by you when you come up in July....
