Just curious to see how many of you are either brave, or foolish!?

What is the lightest Caliber you've used to take a Brown Bear?

    What was the distance?

    7mm mag.

I did find one of my slugs in the hair on the exit side, must have used up its last bit of energy popping through the skin, but it wnet through all the important parts.

Of course I'm a pansy compared so some buddies that use .243s.

By bullet diameter my 375 Ruger with a 270 gr Barnes TSX was the smallest, but I'd hardly call it small. The other gun I've killed brownies with is a 45/70 with a 405 gr buffalo bore.

Myself, I have caught 5 or 6 with a .243w with rem 100 grn. corelocks.
I shoot them , when possible, between the eye and ear, in the temple, as close as I can get.
If they are running away, as they do, I will break their spine, and finnish with a head shot........I cant think of a time when I did so with a .243w though, just had the jump on 'em, and shot before they knew I was even there.......

Now convincing the wife to get closer than 100 yards is near impossible, but she shoot well enough anyway......

Were heading home this evening with a few hundred pounds of meat , Birds and skins, I'll write up a note when I get there, the wife did well with her first, and with two shots outta her Mosin Nagant, 7.62X54r, czeck 147 FMJ's Got a short vid of that and the 100 yard dash it made before running outta blood............biggest bear I ever saw......
If you can't Kill it with a 30-06, you should Hide.

    Default .270 at 185 yards

Shot mine with a .270 at 185 yards, went down after two shots behind the shoulder. The wife has killed a black bear and a moose with her .243

    Default Hunting Brown Bear

I'm new to hunting Big game in Alaska. I'm in the military and have been here for a year. I want and try and get my first brown bear this year. Whats the best way to hunt them. Spot and stalk or has anyone tried calling them in?

I seem to recall someone killing one last year with a 260.. They have much larger coconuts than I do!

Not a brownie, but a Brooks Range grizz if that counts (the one in my avatar).

    .308
    180 gn Sierra Game King
    300 yds
Not a bam-flop, but died soon enough.

In my 7mm mag I used 175gr nosler par. The shot was at about 150yds (no way of getting closer). First shot double lung, seconed shot broke the back right behind the shoulder, third shot through the top of the skull (just to make it qwick).

    Default 8mm Mag

First brown bear I ever shot. 50 yards broadside. My buddy has a .340 weatherby. We put it on the ground with 4 consecutive shots and then it took off. All four shots were in a 4" diameter that broke the leg on the opposite side and were complete pass throughs. The 11th shot put it down for good. This bear simply had the will "not" to die.

30-30, 15 yards. I would have gladly let him live if he would have just gone away. I gave him every opportunity to leave.
