    Default K-bay trail reports 2010

here is the first, slightly informal

    Hi Everyone

Here is the first installment of K Bay trail reports. FYI, I hiked to Grewingk Lake via the Saddle Trail on 4/30/10 and there are approx. 7 trees down. There are 2 clusters of downed trees up in the saddle and there is currently 1 ft. or less snow up there too. Snowshoes are highly recommended....or skis. The Grewingk Valley, on the south side, has up to 6" of snow in places and the lake is still frozen. There could be more in the trees closer to Glacier Spit. And I'm sure that it will all go fast. Right? As for getting further into the park......Time will tell. Hope all are ready for a great, safe season.

The trail reports can also be accessed at www.alaskastateparks.org click on Current News.

We hiked to first lake from the lagoon ranger station, and on the 22nd there was still quite deep snow where the trail dropped down at the head of the lake and the lake was still frozen, but the snow had melted considerably by the time we left on the 27th and the lake was ice free.

We hiked the coalition trail before the crews had cleared it, and there wasn't much deadfall to be cleared.

Also hiked the saddle trail to the Grewingk tram and back. The tram is a serious chore to opperate. After helping our kids get across in two trips, we decided against trying to pull ourselves across, and had a good workout bringing them back. The mooring buoy by the trailhead was occupied both times we came to do the hike, so on the second time I dropped the family off on shore, moored at the far buoy and came to shore with the inflatable. Next time we get down there we'll have to do the saddle trail to Grewingk lake.

The trail crews are working to re-route the saddle trail to add some switchbacks to eliminate the steeper sections.

Had a great trip and fantastic weather last week.
