Thread: Cabela's Let Me Down!

    Default Cabela's Let Me Down!

    Hello Alaska Hunters & Pilots,

Yes Cabela's has let me down. I recently purchased a 4-Man 4-Season “Expedition Tent” for an upcoming flight/hunt to Alaska. The $350 tent including shipping was used twice and I have only owned it a little over a month.

While setting the tent up in a no wind condition one of the aluminum poles broke at the joint. Anyway after calling the Cabela's Service Line for the third time someone finally spoke to me. The two previous calls involved extensive hold times and the promise that they would call me back, that never occured. All I wanted was a replacement tent pole.

Anyway today I was informed that they could not replace the broken pole and told me I could contact the “overseas” distributer to see if they could help me. My response was that I didn’t purchase this tent overseas and I think they should stand behind their product.
Then the Cabela's service representative told me I could return the entire tent and then receive a replacement tent in about two to three months because the item was on “back order”.

I sure wish American companies would purchase American products. This tent was made in Viet Nam. Has anyone else had problems with Cabela's?

    Thanks for listening,

    James

Sounds like you got a grumpy rep. I have never had any issues, but their reasons seem legit. If they don't have it, they don't have it...

It stinks when things go that way.

I have to say though, Vietnam has some pretty good manufacturing for being an "evil overseas country selling cheap junk to Americans" producer.

Eberlestock makes their packs there, and I like them a lot (just bought my third one...) They are pretty much bombproof IMHO.

My Tent came from Cabelas with a "repair sleeve" for the aluminum tent poles. It is the XPG ultralight. Yours might have as well. Or you could find some pipe/tubing at a local hardware store and make your own. At least until you can get your situation resolved with Cabelas...

I probably should have bought a tent from REI, but I try to avoid the vegan deadlock crowd that where stocking caps in the summer.

I don't shop at Cabellas unless I get a gift certificate for Christmas. I'm a walmart kind-o-guy, they stand behind their overseas junk lol

    BTW I dig your Maule

    Default Wrong tree for barking

Must have bought about a gazillion items from Cabelas and never had a problem with returns/replacements. Must be a problem with the specific item. Guess I'll go look at my catalog since you reminded me............

Default Difference Between Cabelas & Walmart?

    Hello Alaska Hunters & Pilots,

The only difference between Cabelas and Walmart is the color of the roof and the prices $$$$$.

I have also never had a problem with cableas. I have found stuff in my storage tub that I've had for over a year and never used, sent it back to them and received a credit with no questions asked. Great company.

    No, never.

I was working in Kotz in 2004 and had the plastic clear top of a stainless coffee kettle melt on a camping trip. I had my younger brother and best friend from NC flying up the following week to take a remote float trip. I called Cabelas and in 3 days (IN FRICKING KOTZEBUE), I had a yellow envelope from Cabelas with not one, but two replacement tops. Over the years I have returned broken fishing rods, camp chairs (I am a big boy), etc.. and they always do the right thing. Sounds like in your instance they were not able to shet out a tent pole as you requested

Cool what a bunch of ninnies....

i buy my stuff where i get the BEST gear at the BEST price, regardless of the politics of the establishment or their clientele.
Bought my last tent, a Nallo, from Barney's.
Why would i give a rat's butt what the guy ahead of me in line had for breakfast, or how they wear their hair
    Get a grip
    (oh, and i wouldn't buy a tent at wally's , or a cabelas brand....and a good 4 man 4-season tent ought to cost about $500 min.)

I feel the same way about Sportsman's, and Cabela's for that matter.

    first mistake..getting on the phone.
just mail it to them, its not their reps phone guys job to mail you a tent pole, they send a little repair tube in there for just such a purpose.
america is so stuck on everything being perfect all the time that we get a hitch in a plan and we think its someone else job to fix it..
like someone said...depends who you buy from. cabela's is the outdoor walmart, so far for me great customer service, but they are not the small mom and pop operation that would even be remotly set up to send you one tent pole...wrong business if you want that kinda of service.
can't expect the same service from barneys as you do from cabela's two different stories with two different missions. think about this kinda stuff before you buy.
they'll replace a tent, but you've gotta give them time. you break a pole and bob at barneys will have one in your had by the end of the day...shop and pay for the service you'd like...simple stuff.

I agree with others who have said that you talked to the wrong person. I have had similar problems in the past, and if Cabela's does not have they give you the option to exchange the tent, or a full refund. It does not matter if you write or mail to them. Call early, and explain the situation. They will take care of you right then, unless you talk to the wrong person. In this case, report the name of the person to one of the supervisors.

By the way, save this thread as a bookmark on your browser, and then ask Customer Service if they want to see it, and then e-mail it to them. Do this after they have taken care of you, and also let us know how it goes later.

If they don't have a pole, they don't have a pole. I doubt they would stock pieces of an overseas-manufactured item.

    Default Cabelas Let Me Down!

    Hello Alaska Hunters & Pilots,

Thanks for the responses. Yes I was a real fan of Cabelas until recently. Now I can just vote with my wallet. In this attached picture I look like a "GD"Cabelas catalog. Notice the Cabelas backpack, tent, clothing from head to toe, and not to mention the Cabelas Credit Card in my back pocket. PS: I'm still having fun!

Consider it a lesson learned. If that tent couldn't handle perfect weather, how in the hell will it handle ALASKA!! Send it back. Buy a real tent. I know guys like the guide models. Other cabelas tents work well too, do a search here. This lesson just might have saved your hunt!

I won't go as far as saying I have had terrible luck with Cabelas but they have been going down hill I feel ever since they went public.

I personally don't shop Cabelas for hardly anything anymore.

I think they have an edge on some clothing but for performance stuff they seem to have lost it.

I also am not supporting their Alaska mail order anymore really. They have pulled out of Iditarod and supporting Alaska so I will shop if at all possible with companies that at least want to be up here and support us.
