Default Smoke sticks by deer quest

I was watching the Outdoor channel today and they were baiting bears in Saskatchewan and using this smoke stick. It's a scented stick that on one end you light on fire and let burn for a second, blow it out and it smokes out a certain scent (hickory, berry, anise, etc). There made by like deerquest or something like that but they looked interesting. They burn like 3 hours at a time and put out a pretty good deal of smoke. Easy to use, too.

We tried them a few years back. They are pretty much an incense stick with different scents. We found that they work best if you put them in a container with holes in the sides like the company recommends. They do put off a lot of scent and the bears didn't seem to mind them, but truthfully I didn't see the bears take much of an interest in where the smell was coming from. After the lack of interest by the bears we moved on to scented sprays with much better results. We spray the surrounding vegitation several times a night from our blind while we are sitting and the scent stays all night. I can't tell you how many bears we have had come around and smell where we have sprayed. Get ahold of Jess at baitem907 and she will square you away with some cover scent sprays.

    Default Recipe for Incense Sticks

Items you need to make your own sticks:

    1. Unscented incense sticks (bundle of 100)
    2. 2oz. Fragrance
    3. 2 oz. Di-Propylene Glycol (DPG)

Mix fragrance and DPG together and stir really well. DO NOT USE ALCOHOL based fragrances (extracts). Using alcohol bases will make the sticks smoke excessively! Oil based only
Place foil on a cookie sheet and fold up around the edged of sheet.
Pour mixture into the cookie sheet and place sticks in the mixture.
Let soak for 24 hours (DO NOT BAKE!!) Let soak on the counter
Place sticks back into a bundle and rubber band one end
Hang to dry for another 24 hours (place paper towels or a jar under them)

Use the excess drippings and fragrance at your bait station
