Default Lye or lime in the outhouse?

There doesn't seem to be a consensus on which I should be using. I know they are different things. Which do you suggest?

Lye is very caustic and nasty, I've never heard of it being used for an outhouse. You can use lime if you want, we always used wood ashes and sawdust which helps it break down and keeps the smell managable.

Ok lime it is, thanks! We don't have a wood burning stove so no wood ash and I don't want to use sawdust as I have a concern that it will fill it up too fast. This hole isn't as deep as I would like for a family of 4.

    Default Lye

Lye made from wood ash is potassium hydroxide. (Lye Water) when mixed for that purpose. Also utilized in soap making. So Mountaintrekker is inadvertingly using lye and just doesn't know it!

A bit less concentrated to say the least, but yes you are correct.
