    Default steelhead fly tying recipes!!??

    Hey all,

If you seen the other post of mine on the fishing site you know I am headed to Yakutat to fish the Situk.
Would like to start tying some flies that you all think work well down there

Can anyone give me a couple recipes to include hook type and size and the material needed to tie the flies. I would like to find the materials now or order it if I need to. I haven't tied a fly in a long time but I will research the method.

    Thanks for all the help.

    Jason,
I'd look through this website and tie up the patterns you can easily put together before you leave. Order the really tough one's though, they're great to deal with.

    http://www.alaskaflyfishinggoods.com...-products.html

Here are some patterns I'd recommend, sizes 2 and 4's usually.
    -Green Butt Skunk
    -Polar Shrimp
-Egg Sucking Leeches with dumbell eyes
    -Garcia Leech
    -Babine Specials

Make things up too and vary some of your colors, you'd be surprised what they'll hit. Seems like every time I'm down there, something totally different is "the" fly for me.

Here's a decent link for some step-by-step ties. Should help get you started.

AK flyfisher's used to have a good amount of patterns on their page, but I can't find it anymore...

    We moved... http://akflyfishers.net/

The site has not been brought up to speed on the archives yet and the flies may not yet be viewable, but they will be soon.

A regular poster here took over the fly of the month for the newsletter and his flies should be available now.

So much for that idea, I cannot find them... But the tying clinics are still being run once a month through the winter... http://akflyfishers.net/page1/page8/page8.html

BTW, this saturday there will be a clinic in spite of the GASS and the timing. Usually we have them on the third Saturday of the month but the annual auction is the night before the third Saturday this month, so it was rescheduled.

It will be at the KTUU offices on Tudor, 10-4.

I caught 2 nice ones last fall on olive leaches:

    Lead
    #4 Streamer hook
    Olive Bunny strips
    Big Black Bead Head (optional)
    Kevlar Thread

Gotta love easy! If you want to get tricky put in a joint. Never leave home without a sculpin, I've caught everything on them.

Be sure to pick up the Alaska Fly Fishers fly book, it's my bible for patterns. There is a spiral bound addition floating around if you can find it.
