what exactly do you have to get this for? to my understanding, you dont have to have this license to commercially raft (six-mile, nenana,). but i just need to make sure. thanks.

take a test. I don't know the in's and out's but I would think you would need it since you are for hire.

6 pack is for a motorized boat you do not need one for rafts (That I know of) I took the test years ago. Takes about 3 months to get your license this time of year.

You only need it to run commercially under power. Technically I think you would even need it for small HP motor on a cat or raft, but I bet it's a pretty grey area. I wonder if the guides who used to do that in the Grand Canyon actually had a 6 pack?

    $$$$$
    Background checks
Physical including urine-sample & vision tests
Class time to help pass test questions for a level of competency
Proof with notarized signatures that exhibit some on-water experience.

    Pretty much in that order.

2-3 weeks of red tape, $$$, info, some more $$$, and some sense.

    Default 6 pack

No 6 six pack license is needed for 6 mile commercial buisness, but a permit is needed. A 6 pack license is for the ocean and navigable rivers, it limits the number of people you can carry to 6. A freshwater 6 pack license is no good in the ocean. The next step up is a Masters license and you are not limited to the number of people you can carry, with it you are limited to the size of boat you can drive by tonnage, they are for power or sail.
