    Default Anchorage?

You sure that is Alaska? It looks more like someplace near to Anchorage!
    It is a cool pic.

    True, true.
Los Anchorage, kinda looking toward downtown (West Chester Lagoon area)...taken from West High.
Crap, I just noticed the horizan is tilted...look at the street lights.
Nah, I'll go with the "it was the frost heaves" excuse.

Default as the northern light season comes to a close

Here are some pictures that I have taken over the last few years of the northern lights. This year was a lot less impressive than some years. The other side (Iceland, Finland, Sweden) got a lot better show than us. Lets hope this next year will be better.

here is three from a couple weekends ago

    the glow of Fairbanks lights

I will post a few of the older ones here in a little bit. There are more on my website if any one is interested in looking at more.

    enjoy

Los Anchorage...that's what the little town that I grew up in is now called. It's kinda south of the Meth-su valley.

    Default Question...

I find it very hard to focus on night shots, & am wonderin' how do you guys do it? I look through the view finder, & try to manually focus the shot, & I look for a subject that's close to focus on that, & then BAM! take the shot, view it & it's blurry...any tips would be helpful please...thanks!

You got to use a tripod and slow shutter speed man. Take control of the camera settings and get off the "idiot modes" (no offense). If your camera has it, enable the mirror lock up feature. To control noise, keep ISO low. I use a remote shutter release to reduce vibrations. Using the self timer serves the same purpose more or less, although a bit less convenient. At any rate, a tripod and a slow shutter speed is crucial in most night shots.

To illustrate my point, below is one of my favorite shots of Alaska nights.

It was from Barrow around December 21st 2007...

    Default Lol! Xd

    Right back @ ya! & we've got a word for you in Yupik...Terrpak! :P

Honestly, I know that to do the night shots, you have to switch to Manual, enable mirror lock up, turn up ISO a bit, & use either timer or remote...now with that said, I tried one night to get the shots of the NL, & I couldn't get the camera to focus correctly...I had a very hard time trying to determine whether or not my lens was in focus...lookin' through the viewfinder & the actual product were two VERY different things...

    So let me ask again...

What do you focus on to get your shots with such a small view through the veiwfinder...a nearer object or farther object?
