Don't be looking for any deals until next Christmas season rolls around. It's brand-new, state-of-the-art, et al, etc.. They don't put out deals this early.

Now you can have a SPOT 1 for $50 and that's a pretty good deal.

Did you see these guys? Looks like they may be in stock...

They pulled the affected units off store shelves 3-4 months ago. There is no chance of buying one of the recalled units today... at least not from a reputable dealer.

    Default Spot GPS (which version?)

Ok, so I hate to kick a dead horse here but I need your all's help. I have decided to get a SPOT gps tracking device but I don't know which version. After checking the other SPOT threads on this forum I am still somewhat confused, probably because the newest thread on the topic is about 3 years old.

Which version of the spot has been the most effective and usable in Alaska?
Also I noticed there were some extra features available for purchase. I will be doing both hunting and a lot of trail hiking and camping so what is the recommendations?

    Thanks

It appears that there is no appreciable difference in the units as far as how quick/accurate/reliable they work. I thought I read something about a better GPS unit in version II. I guess not though. The Spot II adds another message button, which would be nice to have, but would depend on what you want to communicate, and who you want to communicate to. Other than that the II is smaller, but uses AAA batteries instead of AA batteries of the original version. Hence, the original version's batteries last twice as long.

I like the basic service, plus optional tracking and extraction insurance.

I would recommend the Spot II. Not only does it have extra messaging capabilities, but it actually has a cover over the emergency buttons. No chance of sending a 911 message by hitting something in a pocket or pack.

    Default budget

depends on your budget. for fitty bux you can get the spot - for another hunnerd you get spotII.....they both will work just fine.

I went with the 2 because I can't stand to buy outdated technology (and it is smaller for sheephunting - so much that I can now take my WHOLE toothbrush!!!!!!!!!!

I don't mind the battery change since I already go w/ triple A batteries in the headlamp. I will go with the spot II this year for my sheep hunt.
