Water temp is critical in the spring. Depending on how close to ice out you go you will likely not need your riggers. I wouldn't even worry about them until surface temps hit 60*. If you go early and the water is still cold mid 30's to mid to high 40's look for shallow bays with incoming creeks. Try to find the warmest water possible. Lake trout's preferred temps are 48 to 52 degrees. Early on I will fish as shallow as 2 feet. Your best bet for lures in shallow water are flatfish or kwikfish. If you're running braid make sure to run a mono leader as the braid will break in short order banging off the rocks. I run 20 to 30# main line with 40# leaders about 6' long.

    What size Kwikfish are recommended?

I would use the 16's in Kwikfish and T55 and T60 in Flatfish.
