Default Charged By A Bear! Today

So I grabbed my .22 and went for a walk in the woods behind my house. I just crossed the fence and heard some bushes crashing and looked up to see a HUGE black bear running right at me. I fired once in the air and the bear turned right around and ran away. That's when I saw she was only a pretty small bear. Funny how she looked a lot bigger running at me than she did running away Anyway as soon as she left I noticed three little bear cubs at the base of an old rotten stump. They didn't seem the least worried about me and I was able to get very close. This was old growth woods so I could see 200+ yards all around me so I would see momma if she came back. I got on my cell phone and called my neighbor, whose house was only like 100 yards away and told him to bring a camera and his deer rifle. He did and we got some great close up shots of the cubs that I will post here as soon as I figure out how to post them.

Are you sure it wasn't the state mascot?

*** As I write this it is 1730. I found the cubs about about 1500 and she hasn't come back for them. I can hear them calling every so often. I will go and check tomorrow. If they are still there I will call the DNR.

Very nice! Kinda weird about the momma though. I would think it would help to keep human scent away from now on. Kinda like cats and their young, disturb them to much and the mom abandons.

Glad you got the photo thing covered now! Again, very cool.

Wow, I'm glad that didn't turn into the tragedy it could have for you (or Momma, or the cubs).

Definately give Momma some room to get her cubs, or there could soon be a call to Moose and Goose having to come and destroy them, and I KNOW you wouldn't feel good about watching THAT picture unfold!

I'm glad NOBODY had a tradegy. You or Momma.

Not sure about breeding seasons down there, might be to early still. But bawling cubs could bring in a boar that will kill the cubs. That brings the sow back into heat. Nature at its best!

True fact. Boars will often kill the cubs from another Boar to bring the sow back into heat for HIS insemination. I hope that Momma comes back REAL soon for them cubs. Could still be a tragedy for THEM.

    Prayers out.

Well the cubs are gone. I can tell from their tracks where they crossed a snow patch that they walked out with their momma.
After I saw they where gone I brought my beagle Jake down to where they had been. He surprised my by letting our a perfect "strike" bawl and trying to track them down. I had him on a leash and didn't let him though. Ever heard of a bear hunting beagle?

Yep, just did! With big game it depends on the dog's speed, agility and how smart they are. You'll never know till he gets a test run! Looks promising with the nose atleast.

Sure hope that bear didn't keep your credit card.
