    Default CUSTOM 340WBY - 2nd Range Report

I have finalized my two hunting rounds for big game with my 340Wby. I will use the Weahterby Factory Ammo 250gr Partition for dangerous game and my hand load using the Sierra 250gr SBT for all other big game.

The Factory ammo I have already posted the accuracy and the results on my first range report with a five shot group 7/10" and moving at 2990.

The next load is the 250gr Sierra SBT moving at 3020fps and group size is .558", using Weatherby brass, Rem 9 1/2M primers, with IMR7828

First here is pictures of the brass

    Group size was .558"

Only thing left to do is kill something with it! Got any plans for that?

Four hunts this fall it is all falls in place - one on black bear three on white in Mississippi, Louisiana and Missouri. If I can put the money together, a Black bear hunt in Alaska in the spring of 2011. Also, might get to go on a russian bore hunt in the Pass swamp in Mississippi but not sure yet.

Beartooth.. Great shooting! I have been looking into your testing as I have picked up a 340 weatherby also. Have handloaded the 250 gr Accubonds with pretty good results but want to also try the Sierra's 250 SPBT. Hve not tried the partitions but have tried the Weatherby factory 250 gr in the hornady's. It does seem to like the heavier bullets. It sure is a fun rifle to shoot and and thanks for all the updates on your load findings. Enjoy the round and good luck this season.

Ridge Runner, the 340Wby likes the 250gr bullets and most who shoot the 340Wby also say it prefers the 250gr bullets. If you have half the fun of shooting your 340Wby as I do mine, then you are having lots of fun.

MontanaRifleman, I believe you are correct. Will have fun doing a little tweaking of the round. I actually have three accurate rounds now. The Factory 250gr Partition at 2990fps, Handloads with the Sierra 250gr SBT at 3020fps and the Accubond at 2913fps

I now have three different rounds that are accurate and can be used for specific applications on big game.

    1. Accubond 250gr moving at 2913fps

    2. Weatherby Factory 250gr Partition moving at 2990fps

    3. Sierra SBT 250gr moving at 3020fps

Max Point blank range is 340 yds when zeroed at 270 yds.

To put things in perspective - below is the ballistics for the SBT

    Yards Vel. Energy
    Muzzle - 3020 - 5063
    100 - 2852 - 4515
    200 - 2690 - 4017
    300 - 2534 - 3565
    400 - 2384 - 3155
    500 - 2240 - 2785

Beartooth.. What was your load for the sierra's if you don't mind me asking. I may pick up a box at the show this weekend and play with some loads.

I used IMR7828 (start with 86grs and work up in half grain steps) Weatherby brass and Rem 9 1/2M primers with an over all length of 3.565". Let me know how they work out. RL-25 also worked good with them but I was not able to get as good accuracy. Also got good velocities and accuracy with MRP but ran out of powder before I was finished.
