    Default CUSTOM 340WBY - 1st Range Report

Here is where I am at the moment.

Much more has been done outside of what I am going to post today. My focus at the moment is on the 250gr bullets. I have tested 200gr SST and they average 3204fps and are 9/8" -1 1/2" in group size. I have tried 210gr Partitons and 215gr SBT but accuracy is not what I want but velocities were there.

Now, my rifle is a fast rifle, when compared to Weatherby factory balllistics shooting Weatherby ammo which list the 250gr Partition moving 2941fps and my rifle with this ammo recorded and average of 2990fps.

It is shooting Accubonds and Partitions very well but not settled on a load yet, lots of work to still do. Will also be testing the 250gr SBT.

Here are the results of the two best Accubond loads form my work so far.

Group size is .657" moving at 2913fps

Group size is .910" moving at 2917fps

That's some nice shooting BT! You gotta be happy with that.

Never could figure out why we are always trying to put the bullet in the same hole? Seems like it would be counter productive to keep shooting a critter in the very same spot over and over

That is why I have a 340Wby, I don't have to keep shooting the critter in the very same spot over and over : it only takes one

Don't worry Montana - after first shot that critter will be shiftin gears and holes won't overlap!

Default Getting close to game time...

Looking good BT...I think that rifle wants to be in the game (up north with us or on the plains of Africa).

Yes, and it will be put in the game over the next few years.

Default Put much thought to the 300g SMK or VLDs?

Or would you be concerned about the bullets failing to perform at point-blank ranges?
I've read that the Berger VLD is going to come out in a 300g form this summer. I've been interested in seeing whether or not that bullet would fly a little better than the Accubonds after 500yds. Unfortunately, we have no place to get range experience at greater than 300yds...

How bad does that thing rock your chops anyway?

It is not that bad at all. I actually like pulling the trigger on those 250gr bullets humming down range at around 3000fps, it is a thrill. You can notice by the groups that the recoil does not impacted me that much at all. It is one cool round for sure. Lot's of authority, not to hard to handle and great down range ability and accuracy.

Your tgt says you are handling loads very well for sure - was mid 50's here today in IL - sunny - just beautiful! I had to get out so shot up 30 rounds of 308 and 20 hot rounds or 280 I had worked up, I don't get flinchy but 40 rounds was plenty in a T shirt - I was ready to stop! When I dig out one of my 300WMags about 20 - 30 rds is plenty - after that I can get frustrated and then loose the accuracy I seek.
I will say these new High powered deer slugs like the winchester 385 gn sabot 12 ga load are not real fun to shoot a lot of!

You got that right, I do not like to shoot a 12 gauge with a Slug.
