    Default 16' Jon boat planing.....

Will a 20 hp 4 stoke easily plane a 16' Jon boat (275 lbs) on a river? With 2 people? With 3 people? Just fishing, no hunting, with limited gear.

Yes. I have a 15hp on an 18' jon and I can easily run around with 3 on board. I can take 4 but it really slows the boat down. Pay attention to the motor's trim angle and experiment with how to distribute your load and it'll work fine.

    Default Light

It sounds a little light. I had a 30 H.P. Honda on a 16' Lowe and it would plane 2 people. But with a 20 H.P. I doubt it would do it.

Two people and moose, no way.

    Might, but why underpower yourself.

    Prop or jet??

I think it would be ok with a prop and iffy with a jet.

Yes. I have had a 15 hp Honda on my 16' Lowe when my big motor was broken. It was able to get down to the Deshka and back with 4 people & gear in the boat. With 2 people it got around very well.

first do you have a jet or a prop? if you have a jet you need to rember you will lose 30% of your hp. you also have to look at how wide the bottom of your boat is. if you have a 48" bottom you will be fine but if you get up to a 60" bottom you you will start to get bogged down

    Default No Jet

No jet and I anticipate a 48" bottom

    Default Cabin Plans

I'd like to put a cabin on my boat 20' flatbotton jonboat this summer and am looking for some plans someone may have used that I can use as a starting point. I'd be very thankful for any help.
