Default How is the Moose hunting up by Sheep R. in 14B?

Had a friend ask me about joining him on a moose hunt in unit 14B up by sheep river in the MatSu Valley. This would be an early August hunt where we would dpart out of Talkheetna. Anyone familiar with hunting Moose in this area?

It can be O.K., but it's tough, thick country. Lots of boat traffic and hunters. Fairly difficult to get high enough to glass. You are not going to get far enough up the Sheep River to get into the high country. Early August is going to be a bowhunt only..in that case the leaves and the brush are going to be REALLY thick. Late September is much better..last week of the season is best.

How about the other side(of the highway)? Does it get any better along the Deshka?

AKDoug, is correct on the brush and river traffic. It can be a really good area, if you are a hunter that knows how to hunt brush for moose and are willing to spend a week or two hunting the area real hard, it would not stop me from going.

Talk to tjm about how bad the river can be. I believe he may still have a youtube video out there of a trip up Sheep R.
We do not go to the green woods and crystal waters to rough it, we go to smooth it. We get it rough enough at home; in towns and cities; in shops, offices, stores, banks anywhere that we may be placed

that early most the moose in that country are right up at the top of treeline, doing their pre rut stuff, you might find some down low as well but most i see are right up near the top of the timber. i saw alot of plane traffic in that area last fall...

I think you're talking about Sheep Creek....I think the poster is talking about Sheep River up the Talkeetna... running the river is cake but hunting the area is not...

It's cake if you have the right boat..

Brownbear is right. Unless you are hunting later in September, the bulls tend to be up a little higher. Although, a few good bulls came right off the Talkeetna and Susitna this season early on.

Deshka? Grits, all the river areas have moose, but they also are the most heavily used by boat traffic from the most populous part of the state. There are moose there and good ones get killed every year, but it's a really low success %.
