Nothing quite like watching 6 or 8 steelhead and rainbows feeding on the eggs from a spawning pair.
I choose to fly fish, not because its easy, but because its hard.

Rainbow, like most fish, will eat eggs, fry or fingerlings of their own species. Fish don't have much of an emotional connection to the early life stages of their species - if it moves around, they will eat it!

Consider instincts and memory as well. I have heard fish will hit flesh flies long before the salmon are in. Memory, instinct, whatever, from previous years experience. Perhaps the same could apply to your egg theory.

Rainbows will eat thier own flesh and meat. I can remember in the late 70's when you could pretty much rape the rainbows on the kenai. We would run out of eggs both salmon and trout. We would cut a chunk off a bow and slap it on the hook and bang.

    Default Swanson river

We used to do that on Swanson when ther was still a wood bridge at the end of the road. Eye balls were allways the best bait.
