    Default Heym

anyone have any experience or thoughts on a Heym O/U double rifle ?? Ive always loved how a regular double handled but could never afford one, but a gun collector friend was telling me yesterday he could find me a Heym for a decent price.

Good guns and very strong. Not as fast to reload as a SxS DG gun as you must open the barrels farther for the bottom shell to clear. If going with a O/U you might look at the Winchester 101 in rifle form and truthfully for the money the old Valmet ain't bad.

Don't know what you are looking to spend but Casper 45 on this forum has some double rifles for sale at fair prices in the sale section

Shotguns or rifles I've never been big on O/Us, but that's a personal thing. Regardless of personal oppinion I would never use an O/U as a dangerous game rifle. Reload time is MUCH slower. For anything else I wouldn't worry. Heym makes very nice SxS rifles. I'm considering buying on for my first double. I'm not so familiar with the O/Us, but if you like them for non dangerous game use I would say go for it if you like the fit and feel. Before buying it I would recomend joining www.accuraterealoading.com and go the to double rifle forum and ask the gentlemen there. They have all kinds of experience and could tell you about the Heym O/U. Good luck!

Brett please explain to me why an over under is much slower to reload. I have hunted extensively over the years with over under and side by side shotguns and not noticed a diserable difference in relaoding times. I think the difference in reloading time would be negligible. Maybe even tenths of a millisecond. I think saying "MUCH slower," is well....overstated.

I don't really care for the over under double rifles anyways, I would probably never get one. I just don't like the way they look.

Agreed. I don't like the way the rifles or shotguns look, but then again I grew up shooting a SxS. MUCH slower was a little MUCH on my part. They by design have to reload slower though. By vertue of design, one barrel over the other, they have to break to a wider angle and close over a wider angle than a SxS. Not saying you couldn't get use to it. But it will take a little more time. Not my choice for a double.
