Cool i got an old raptor 660 for christmas, need help!

i start the engine, warm it up and rev it, and everything sounds fine, i pull the clutch back, put it into gear, and right when i go and let off the clutch lever, something is rattling hard. i think it is inside my engine. i inspected the outside of my engine and nothing seems to rattle when i rev it in neutral. but when i rev it in gear, something rattles. what could be the problem? i hope its nothing serious. and also, the previous owner took a hacksaw and sawed off the spark arrestor from the tail pipe. will this cause any harm or damage to the engine, i heard it can mess up the valves. i also heard from other people that it will do nothing to the engine or valves. so i dont know if sawing things off from the muffler is a bad thing or not. i need opinions. thanks.

It's unlikely that eliminating the spark arrestor will cause any damage to your valves. It doesn't create enough back pressure that it's elimination would make much difference. It might make the thing a little louder, that's about it.

As for what's causing the ratling noise - if you don't have the skill to tear it apart yourself, I would advise you to take it in to a shop and have them check it out. Sounds like a tranny problem, not engine since it only rattles when you put it in gear. It might be something simple like a clutch issue. I wouldn't advise riding it until you get it fixed though. That's just begging to turn a small problem into a big one.

The other 299,300,000 people can have it.

check them muffler bearings, they are known to caus serious rattles when they are not properly adjusted. probably messed them up when the arrestor was hacksawed!

Hey, I found some of that blinker fluid you were asking me for the other day. Come on over and pick it up whenever you want. I can't believe they were out of it at Schucks.

Cool this is one of the first raptor 660's that came out. (2001)

whats so bad about summer air in the tires when winter comes? yeah, i think i got the rattling when in gear thing all good now, thaught it was my clutch plates. turns out it was just the mount bolt was loose on the engine head, now my major problem is the oil leak. looks like my leak is coming from the right side of my engine. oil seeps out of my clutch thing, i forgot what its called, but its a bolt right under the clutch that you can adjust it with an allen wrench. and also i see oil drip onto my coolant drainer when its running, to the right of my oil filter. i think the oil leak is my only major problem i have now, all the little problems i can deal with tomorrow.
