Default Nikon Monarchs - Stripped Eyepiece

Anyone have an eyepiece strip out?
We do not go to the green woods and crystal waters to rough it, we go to smooth it. We get it rough enough at home; in towns and cities; in shops, offices, stores, banks anywhere that we may be placed

    Default you are not alone

Mine lasted about 18 months before the plastic gave out. Send them in with the box you got them in and Nikon will give you a new pair. This is my only complaint with the binos but I guess it's a good thing it's the middle of winter and not hunting season.

    Default nikon monarch-!#@#

I had the eye pieces blow up on me while I was deer hunting in october this year. The glue and eye pieces/cups just started to loosen and fell out. By the end of the day , both eye pieces were falling out. That is a sorry product. Too bad cuz the glass and vision is actually pretty darn nice. I am disgusted with nikon and don't even care to get the binocs fixed. I am no longer a proud wearer of their gear. I am thinking about sinking them in a crabpot. Probably wouldn't even catch any rust.

Yep. I think it's time to get back what I can then invest in higher grade. Glass is great, it's the exterior build.

    Default Common issue

With modern glass and coating, precision grinding etc. much of the quality of modern optics is in the mechanical construction - not the optical performance of any better makers and some of the lesser known ones.

I first ran into this in the mid 70's in camera lens. In the 60s and before optical glass and coating was somewhat of an art - remember the tiny bubbles you used to have in the better quality lens - it was kinda of a hall mark of better glass.

You can get some dang good optical performance for not much money nowadays - but as you found the mechancial construction may leave a lot be desired when you get plastic rather than machined aluminum and brass.

If you want a step up without destroying the bank take a look at the Minox HG line. I have the 10x43's and they have a magnesium body. To get that from Swaro you have to jump all the way to the "el" line!! I have 3 seasons on them and they are forever on my chest w/ no issues.

I have peaked through them and I did like the glass.

Pisses me off about the Nikons...I only had them in the field on 3 separate occasions.

Nothing worse than a highly touted piece of gear that falls short in the field! I am sorry to hear of your troubles w/ the Nikons, I have handled them in the field and they seemed like a quality product for the $$. I guess that isn't the case, at least not anymore. Kind of like every piece of sitka gear I have purchased save for the ascent jacket which I really like but only brings them to 1 for 4 w/ me...

Yep. They are going back for replacement then up for sale. Time to step up to the $700-$1000 range.
