Thread: Upper Huffman?

  1. #1

    Default Upper Huffman?

Anyone know anything about this area? I'd like to try a ride there this year so if anyone is willing to share directions and such it would be much appreciated. I know I can probably ask on Snowest but it's not worth the hassle of trying to get info from there.

It's part of Chugach State Park, but isn't open due to insufficient snow.

    Default Insufficient Snow

AKHunter, I'm not much of a snowmachiner but I live in that area and walk the dogs up there quite a bit. The directions are simple:

    (1) From New Seward, head east on O'Malley
    (2) Right turn onto Hillside Drive
    (3) After about 2 miles, left turn onto Upper Huffman
    (4) At the top of Upper Huffman, take the left fork (Sultana). The parking lot is at the end of the road.

One common mistake people make: the Huffman exit off New Seward does not connect to Upper Huffman. Not sure how that happened!

I think you have pretty much the whole valley from the Glenn Alps parking lot to Powerline Pass to play in. Doesn't seem like it's open very much to snowmachines though because of the dreaded 'Insufficient Snow'. In fact, I can't remember it being open at all last year, and it's definitely not open right now.

    Hope that helps,
    Rob

I'm thinking this might not be the same area I am trying to get info on, I know there were a couple fo guys that rode it within the past few days. Could be that they are calling it Upper Hoffman but it's in another locale.

    Yes...

funny that this old joke has found it's way to this forum...lol...UH is where you say you've been when you show pics of a good ride and don't want to say where you were...the joke started with pics from up north, won't say where, but has now grown to be UH="I'm not telling".... like saying "I caught these big rainbows on 'no name creeek'"....

Default Chugach State park anti snowmachine

The Parkies do not open this area often but are too happy to use snowmobile registration $$ to groom for skiers. This is the truth...how can they justify snotrac $$ if the place isn't open?
Parks also is trying to raise the fee to $20/year so they can control more $$ that will never benifit snowmos.

Keep your eyes on Hatcher Pass area plan. There is an attempt by state planners and State Park to turn Hatcher Pass into a Park (and it is not a Park).

Without the aggressive paddle tracks everyone would be stuck by the parking lot and make all the greenies happy.

Does having a paddle track make you a jerk? Or can you be one with a 3/4" track and a bump sled?

I have a shorty with 1" studs and a can. Am I a jerk I also have a paddle track with and without a can, plus a couple Indy Lights. I guess I am alright. (dripping with sarcasm )
