    Default Weight Pulling

Does anyone here participate in any canine weight pulling competitions? I have a 2 year old Malamute that I want to start training, and he is WAY too big to skijor with. I'd get pulled at 100 mph! Any advice is appreciated!

    Cheers

Default Oh yeah, my dog is stronger than your dog!

Just kidding around, this forum needs some posts and I am bored. However...my 8 year old female lead dog weighs 75 and can pull me (160 pounds) and four 5-gal buckets of water (another 160 pounds) in a small sled with 2 inch runners by herself for 2 miles before I have to get out and run alongside. I don't know if that is some kinda record but I am impressed. I don't think there are any weight pull comps up here anymore, maybe at the Winter Fairs or the Rondy, don't know. You should post some flyers around claiming your dog is the strongest dog in all of Alaska, I am sure that will get some responses.

Akanders, how big is your Malamute ? About 20 years ago I bought
a malamute puppy from some kennels where the sire was kept
that was 150 pounds and I swear it looked as big as a calf.
My dog got to be about 130 pounds and I was told he would
make a good freighting animal because of his size. He was strong
as heck but not very fast. I was wondering if they ever breed
Malamutes in Alaska to be very large to be used in hauling
goods and supplies as opposed to the smaller dogs that are
    used in racing ?

Yes, there are still those who breed and run freight dogs. Not all mushers are racers. I personally LOVE the big, strong dogs. I don't know of any weight pulling competitions either.

    Default Mals

I am not too sure if there are any malamute breeders aiming at frieght dogs, 1sttimestar seems to know some, but I know you don't have to try real hard to make a mal a weight pulling machine! Mine just weighed in at 100# on his third birthday....He's great, and he is starting to simmer down a bit. I am working on gettin him skijoring, and the weight pulling still gets done every so often at home.....but i'm gonna make sure he knows how to stop when I am behind him on skis!

    Cheers!

    Default Interior.....

If your up North you can also check out these folks. We've got a huge Mackenzy River Husky who is just chomping at the bit to show these puppies what he's made of. We joined last year, but are a little dissapointed to find out that there are no organized pulls until after the New Year. I guess that's just more training time....

    Default weight pulling

We will be hosting a pull during the Yukon Quest Feb 9th in Fairbanks. Also, there are 3 other scheduled pulls for March. If you have a dog regardless of size and want to pull we would love to have you come out. It is a lot of fun...sometimes the dogs don't want to pull and just sit there, but it is still fun for all.

The Feb 9th pull will be downtown on 1st Ave. Then in Neana at the Ice Classic, then downtown Fairbanks again, and then at Bentley Mall. What type of dog do you have? Interested in pulling?

I don't have any of my own but my best friend Jan is kind enough to share hers with me lol. http://www.muzzysplace.net/AboutUs.html

I help her with tours and take over for her handler occasionally when she goes on vacation as Jan works on the slope.

Any breed of dog is welcome at our pulls. Would you like further information (ie sign up times etc)? We would love for you or anyone else to come out and pull - the more dogs the better time for all.

I too am looking to start freight pulling with my 2 year old malamute. Is there a special type of harness for freight pulling, or will a standard skijoring harness work?

    Thanks!

We use weight pulling harnesses. They are made different to give support. We do have loaner harnesses we loan out at the weight pulls. If you would like additional information - please feel free to contact us.
