Thread: Small Game in the Mat-Su Valley

Default Small Game in the Mat-Su Valley

Thinking of heading to the valley from Anchorage to hunt some hares, grouse, and/or ptarmigan.

I'm willing to put in the work beating the bush with the shotgun, but I haven't done it in the winter and would like some guidance.

    Any help would be appreciated.

Jim Creek has been very productive for hares (an occasional grouse). With the new snow you will have your work cut out for you. If you have a 4x4 you can drive right out to the creek otherwise a wheeler would be your best bet.

We typically just slowly drive/ride along the river bank and look for them sitting under brush piles or watch for them to run. Usually when you find one to chase, there will be 4-5 more within a short walk.

I went out on Wed. and bagged my limit (5) with my .22 pistol, but there wasn't much snow then.

    Good luck!

The porcupine is a peacful animal yet God still thought it necessary to give him quills....
