    Default Just 125 short days....

until spring bear baiting starts! This time of year it's hard not to look out the window at the cold snowy trees and think in just 125 days they will be green and the bears will be hungry! Anyone else looking forward to it!

I have never tried bear hunting, but would like to this year, I know you have to take the baiting class, but I was wondering if it's even worth baiting if you don't have a four wheeler to get the bait supplies out there??

    Thanks,

    Default Baiting

Yes in certain units you will need to take a bear baiting class. Units 6D, 7 , 14A, 14B,15, 16A or 20B require a class.

As far as needing a 4-wheeler? It is not necessary. You only need to be 1/4 mile off of a public road or publically maintained trail. So carrying food in is not a problem. A partner helps, that way carrying in 50 pounds is only half the work. Once the bait starts getting hit it is not necessary to keep it full all the time. I usually then start carrying in 25 pounds per time and spread it out a bit so they have to keep coming back.

I archery hunt and taking a bear with a bow is a blast, or a swoosh might be better. Take along a viedo camera too. I took about two hours of film this year and filmed three kills.

Don't let anyone tell you that bear is not worth eating either. Cooked correctly it is fair eating. Corned bear, sasauge, pepperoni sticks.......
