Default Spear Fishing on the Chatanika

Is this really fishing? Or just a whole lot of FUN!

I remember doing this as a kid, we use to fill buckets full.
Last year was the first time I was able to introduce my kids to it and we had a blast. They made sure I got another permit again this year.

Getting the the lanterns and spears ready tonight!

    Thumbs up

I will go ahead and call it fishing since the less experienced spear fishers don't have much success unless there is a huge run. It is a lot of fun and like you I remember doing this as a kid and thought it was a blast! How have the runs been in the past few years?

They're spearing whitefish. The idea is you stand out in the river with a lantern and the fish swim between your legs, next to you and you spear them. Was a very popular fishery in the 80s with little to no regulation; then the fish stopped showing up in the same numbers and the fishery was shut down until last year I believe...

Is there any other rivers around that have whitefish in them to spear? Maybe the tatalina?

    Thanks
I really wanna give this a try but missed the permits for the chatinika.
