I don't recall seeing it before and it isn't in my Alaska bird book.

    Default Nuthatch

It is a Nuthatch. Perhaps a red-breasted Nuthatch.

Nut hatch they use the chickadee as a watch dog and understand chickadee. Chickadee have the largest vocabulary of the birds in Alaska.

    Good catch, fellas.
I've been watching the nuthatches carry on around the pine cones lately here in Idaho

They are all over those pine nuts.

The male birds look like they are wearing a blue/grey suit. :)

Lots of Pine Grosbeaks around on occasion. I've had a few bouncing off my windows repeated trying to get in the house! Usually they just browse on the spruce tree-tops.

    Agree: red-breasted nuthatch...http://www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/R...ed_Nuthatch/id

We get them on our feeders throughout winter. They love peanut and sunflower (small) pieces and this year started taking whole (shelled) peanuts from the Stellar Jay feeder.
