Thought I'd post a quick note about my son's, Sam, first bull. We left Wasilla Tuesday afternoon and made it into base camp later than evening. Sam will turn 14 later in the month so we thought he was ready to go with is. This was to be his first "real" moose hunt.
We left base camp at 0-dark-thirty and made it to "the mountain" by about 11:30. We started glassing, but weren't seeing moose where we normally do. It was hot and the sun had been hitting the hillside so all the moose were bedded in the thick stuff. We started seeing some cows further down and decided to move for a better angle.
This bull stood up in front of us and just under 1000 yards (ranged). We left one partner with the ATV's and two of us took Sam and put the sneak on the big boy. The bull was with 5 cows. We closed to about 220 - 230 yards. Sam sent a 180 grain 06 behind the shoulder. He had a little trouble with his bolt so I sent a 375 insurance shot down range. One more from Sam's 06 and he was anchored for good.
Got the bull quartered and packed and started back. A few miles down the trail and we came across a little fork that was just a little too close to the trail and I punched my tag.
What a day. My boy's first moose and then a second for the freezer also. Sam's bull measured 59 and change. A very good bull by anyone's standards. I could not have been prouder. He handled himself very well. There is nothing as satisfying as watching your children being successful. A special thanks to Big John and Kyle. We couldn't have done it without them.
