Currently, at many town-hall meetings across our country; citizen protesters are being maligned, belittled, and made fun of for speaking their minds. Citizens exercising their 1st Amendment right to free speech are being called “Un-American”. Nothing could be further from the truth.
Speaking up has always been an integral part of who we are as Americans. Our country was founded by a group of tax protesters; who when they spoke out, were maligned, belittled, and made fun of by the King of England.
Because of the sacrifices made by the Founders, and the blood shed by patriots; our country has a 200-year history of freedom of speech. Never let anyone tell you that it is “Un-American” to speak up and speak your mind. Whatever your cause, never be bullied into silence.
Words of Wisdom
“If the freedom of speech is taken away then dumb and silent we may be led, like sheep to the slaughter.”
---George Washington (American commander in chief of the colonial armies in the American Revolution (1775-83) and subsequently 1st US President (1789-97), 1732-1799)
Without Freedom of Thought there can be no such Thing as Wisdom; and no such Thing as Public Liberty, without Freedom of Speech.
---Benjamin Franklin, writing as Silence Dogood, No. 8, July 9, 1722
“Never be bullied into silence. Never allow yourself to be made a victim.”
