    Default Chugach Management Area

Anyone have any insight or heads up as to what I might encounter in Ptarmigan Valley? I'm going to hike up there tonight or tomorrow and I'm hoping that it got it's name for a reason.... I work on Elmendorf and am trying to find a place to get out for a few hours after work during the week.

You won't find any Ptarmigan until you get up high. It takes a long while to break treeline, but you should find some birds up there. A better bet from the trailhead would be spruce grouse. If ptarmigan is what you're after, climb Baldy and hunt down from the top of the Ptarmigan drainage.

Be careful where you hunt in Eagle River, this map shows Chugach State Park Management Area, lots restricted areas:

Compare it to this map here:

Small game hunting in 14c does not start until the day after labor day. As for ptarmigan, almost any mountaintop above treeline will have ptarmigan on the mountain and in the alders and bushes right at the border of tundra and brush.

    Here are the regs:

    Default Grouse

Went out yesterday and saw about 12 grouse and harvested 5 spruce. Three of them being hens. Had a great time, but had to work to find them. Will be going out again possibly this weekend.
