    Default Bennett Trim Tab Trouble

One side of my trim tabs installed on my Bayliner stopped working, I have gone in and looked at every thing, don't leak, have fluid in tank, motor runs when switch is either port or starboard, lines aren't pinched to the cylinders. It's a 1982 I'd guess new with the boat then. Bennett don't seem to have a complete diagram of the whole deal so I could check out that.
Boy they sure would be great to get fixed, if not manditory!
Any ideas, and one know tricks or ? I'd like to fix it myself before taking it to someone, fear they'll want to install a new pump for $500

Talk to "Tabman" on The Hull Truth forum. He runs the Bennett section there and seems to be full of info on their tabs.

Sounds like a stuck selenoid for that side. Check your wiring going to the selenoid for voltage. If you have voltage then it's the selnoid not opening.

sounds like a relay has gone out. you can test it by swaping relays or use a jumper wire and going to the red to the other wire just dont jump across the black.

    Default Switch the switch

Wiring to the rocker switch is either bad or the switch is. Take switch out and cross wires to see response , if you see movement than it's the switch, if not run new wires to selnoid switch on pump unit and repeat attempt. Good Luck with them damm pesky electric gremlins

    1. If trim tabs do nothing . . . no movement . . . no sound from HPU:
    • Inspect for blown 20 amp in-line fuse in helm control’s orange wire.
    • Inspect for disconnected or corroded connections on HPU ground wire,
orange positive wire from helm control, and quick-disconnect plug.
    2. If HPU runs but trim tabs do not move:
    • Inspect for disconnected or corroded red and green wire connections
at helm control and quick-disconnect plug.
    • The following test can be used to help isolate malfunction.
Remove wires from helm control and touch together as follows:
    Operation Reaction
O range ( + ), blue, red Port trim tab down
O range ( + ), blue, green Starboard trim tab down
O range ( + ), blue, red, green Both trim tabs down
O range ( + ), yellow, red Port trim tab up
O range ( + ), yellow, green Starboard trim tab up
O range ( + ), yellow, red, green Both trim tabs up
If trim tabs function in each of the above combinations, check helm
control. If during this test trim tabs continue to malfunction, inspect HPU.
    3. If one trim tab operates and the other one does not:
    • Inspect for disconnected or corroded red or green valve wire
connections at helm control and quick-disconnect plug. (Red wire
operates port trim tab; green wire operates starboard trim tab).
    • Reverse hydraulic lines at front of HPU to determine if malfunction
is in HPU or actuator / hydraulic connections. If after reversing lines,
symptom shifts to other trim tab, malfunction may exist in HPU. If
symptom remains on the same side, malfunction may exist with the
    actuator/hydraulic connections.
    4. If trim tabs go down but will not retract:
    • Inspect for low voltage of the battery. Check battery for voltage while
HPU (or another accessory) is running. If voltage is less than 10 volts,
    valves may not open.
    • Inspect for disconnected or corroded connections on helm control,
    and quick-disconnect plug.

Default A lot of info. Thanks

Like I said, motor runs when switch is port or starboard and both tabs go up and down on command on the trailer every thing works just fine.

Did Call Bennett and got some experments to try, like measure stroke over all length is 2-1/2".

It seems like only under the pressure of running the boat does one side not work. Bennett said system is self bleeding so thats not needed. I did check fluid level is topped off even after I loosened fitting to check if it pumped out.

So far even Bennett don't have an answer but they are helpful.

Wow, 27 years...that's good service. I whole new system runs between $500 and $700 depending on switch choice. I did my boat in a day...not that hard.
