Last year I made two finishing shots at about 100 yards. Other than that every moose I shot was under 40 yards.

I'd be scared to do that, unless I was 6 feet above him.

Hopefully he landed in his tracks and not on you, and you didn't get too dusty from his fall? That would be a rough hunt...

lol yo know moose are big... they are NOT scary.

that one walked past years ago... and got shot behind the ear...

my best friend shot his first one closer . with his Berreta 9mm.... 54 inches... and before anyone flames it... he was young... new family and wife had the rifle chasing one when that guy stood up in front of him... literally at his feet.. is all he had. 3 of the eight made it to the heart. and the moose stepped 9 steps laid down and died... i skinned it.

Are scary if they're UP and that close. Reference "big"

I's shoot sooner than that to avoid the chance of even a short run (like 6 feet!), though more than half of my big game have not taken one... I still wouldn't make that bet, myself.

S'ok, we all get to do it our own ways, on the subject of shot distance.

    Default Definitely

under 100 yards (3 in Alaska & 1 in New Hampshire). Non under 30 yards and all took about 1 minute to decide they were dead.

And, yes, they are all big.

In my 15 years of hunting I've seen roughly 30 moose shot over the years only 5 of which were shot by me. I can think of only 3 that were over a 200 yrd shot. The longest was 338 yrds away with my 338. Generally speaking its not THAT hard to get inside 200 yrds to moose IME.

Shot my first with a bow off the Haul Road at about 5 yards. I called him in...he came in so fast and thrashing every tree that it scared the he!! out of me. He wanted to either fight or f(*^+, and I didn't want either.

After that...they been from 50 to 150 yards at most.

    3 moose...all under 40 yards..

Called 1 moose into 35 yards for a buddy of mine. We didn't see that one until it was 40 yards away.

I don't think I've ever seen a moose while hunting more than 100 yards away.

16 moose, all except for one was under 100 yards. The one was over 400 yards with my open sight 338, and I will admit I hit him in the front knee the first shot, the secound shot went right where it was supposed to.

I only hunt with open sights because most of them are right in front of you when you see them. Not only that if I stumble on a grizz, I want to look down the barrel and get it close, and not try to fit him in a scope in a fraction of a secound. I don't have to worry if the scope got knocked off because of some of the rough things that happen in the boat or whatever.
Just my preferance. ( In case you guys want to know, its an A-Bolt )

An even better question is how far did you have to pack it?
