People bake cakes - people eat cakes - !!

This was @ Nalakutaq (whaling festival ) last June in Barrow

In Point Hope whaling festival is "Quaqaruq"

Nalakutaq is blanket toss (only) in Point Hope - only!!

In Barrow - Nalakutaq is the 'entire' festival.

In Barrow it is just one day (for each successfull captain).

In Point Hope - Quaqaruq is a 3 day non- stop event !!

Point Hope has two remaining clans; Depending on which clan was succesfull determines which site the festival will be held at.

It is not uncommon to have two festivals in different cerimonial sites going on at the same time.

but none the less, each festival is a 3 day event.

Nice cakes man. Did you order them from a bakery in Anchorage? Must have been a pain to fly up

I am sure.. .. from past experiences in other villages that these cakes were made here in the village. But is not un-usual for people to order 'designer cakes' from Anchorage, the cost freight wise is not that expensive - $2.00 per pound - there abouts. Pepi's Mexican Restraunt makes cakes (and many other things for events & parties and such.

    Many options exist !

    !
Crazy stuff man. I was just joking of course earlier. It must take balls of steel to order a high priced cake from Anchorage and have it flew up. I hate flying with outdoor gear, let alone a cake. In Nome we would fly take out to the villages for folks. But a cake from Anchorage to Barrow? Learn something new every day

balls of steel ?? chuckle !! nah. Like I have said before, the only thing we waste here in the arctic is.. .. money!!

My son many years ago, had a birthday, he wanted pizza! not the store bought type, but Kotzebue has Pizza! pretty good, but expensive as in $42.00 per (with many toppings 5). We called down to Kotz, ordered two to go. We had to pay cab fare, delivery fare and freight. by the time we got those two up to Point Hope, they were cold of course but pop em into the oven for ten minutes and bingo !! Delicious!! - cost - close to $200!

Here in Barrow, Arctic Pizza $26 for the same pie. @ Northern Lights here in town. same pie is $36.00
