    Default Couple black bear questions?

Hi, my wife and are new to AK. We moved up from OR a couple of weeks ago. I have read that black bear is good first choice for newbies in AK. I am wondering if fall bears are good table fare? I don't really want a rug just some meat in the freezer. I was also wondering if someone could give a point in the right direction for location. If anybody ever wants to sit down and give me a lesson I will gladly buy you a beer or coffee.

Fall interior bears are good eating since they are eating berries, normally coastal bears are feasting on salmon and tend to taste and smell a a bit rancid.

Bears and caribou are good starters in Alaska.

Mostly depends on where you will be hunting and how late in the fall.

I should have been more specific. We live in Anchorage and I just started with a new company. So I haven't had the time to build up any vacation time. So I have to be a weekend warrior. I am willing to drive a good bit and camp on weekends off. Luckily my weekend is Tue, Wed.

What kind of shape are you in? If you are in very good to excellent shape you can spot and stalk them off of the Seward Hwy. If you want an eater from south central you will need to get up nice and high in the mountains to the berry patches.

well welcome to the forum & AK. What part of Oregon are you from?
Black bears in the fall are delicious!!! berry bears. kind of spendy for non residents to get started on multiple species, but gotta start somewhere!

Brian - You'll buy the coffee or beer, huh? I'd be happy to sit down with you and look over a few maps. I'm not going to be in town much for the next two weeks, but as of August 13th I'll be back on a regular work schedule and would be happy to meet any afternoon.

Seward Highway is a good bet if you are in good shape. Some of them mountain sides or a lot steeper then they look. Stop and glass the mountain sides along the road. One fall i spotted 14 different black bears on one mountain side sucking up the berries.

    Default Meat

My brother shot a black bear in late June this year just for the meat. We had heard a lot of good about the meat (if they aren't eating fish).. 26 lbs. of bear meat to Indian Valley Meats where they made Hot Breakfast Sausage out of it. Holy smokes, is that stuff ever good... Cost about $50 too, not too bad at all. Makes a killer breakfast burrito. My buddy just told me they made burger out of their June black bears and added a little extra fat than you would with other animals, and it was delicious.. Next time I will try that.

    Default Just 8 tenderloin steaks!

Couldn't stop and they were awesome!! Bear was killed on August 1st! I was not the shooter but was there and noticed the meat didn't stink even though it was on salmon stream. Word was that berries are also out down there and they have a good mixed diet. We were surprised and made for a heavy pack for the shooter!! Send me a PM if ya want.
