The engine revs are slowed and the timing changed, causing the engine to literally run backwards. To do so requires a different clutch, but eliminates the addition of a reverse gear in the chaincase and the necessary linkage to engage the gear.
New style-drive clutch must engage in forward and reverse rotation.
Old style- drive clutch always rotates the same way, gearing between the driven clutch and drive shaft does the reverse chores.
