    Default S.E. Elk hunts

    FYI
Just got an e-mail from the biologist regarding the Etolin/Zarembo elk hunt. Zarembo is closed to elk hunting, so the only option is Etolin and surrounding islands.

You think they'd issue an E.O. or new release on their web site - none found.

I'm not sure you could PAY ME to go on that hunt.

Guess I've turned into a candy ass in my old(er) age.

Zarembo isn't that big a island and starting in 12 days will have a couple hundred local area folks start hunting it.At least one guide hunts it alot and fisherman cruse its shore all summer.Folks keep trucks and wheelers there year round. There are forrest service there most of the time,my neighbor spends five days a week there and does have a nice Elk rack laying in his yard.

I saw that in the regs this year. I wondered if it would come up here on the forum.

Did the email mention why? or give any sort of reasons for having Zarembo closed?

    Default elk e-mail

(There will be no open season for elk on Zarembo this fall (neither drawing or registration permit) due to low elk numbers and low bull:cow ratios.)

I know they closed the registration hunt last year because of numbers. But looking at draw and registration harvest numbers 05' had the biggest numbers not the last couple of years.
As for regs yes it says closed on Zarembo. When we put in for the draw Zarembo was still in the picture, nothing about it being closed in the draw supplement. We had a honeyhole to check out and am way more familiar with Zarembo than Etolin.
Now I'll have to buy that 40'-50' boat earlier than retirement just to do the hunt!!!

It seems everyone goes to POW for black bear so Zarembo and Etolin are loseing much of the calf and fawn crop.If bears don't get them wolfs will it seams

Had buddies that used to live and work on Zarembo and they never even saw any sign of bear. The times that I have been there, no bear or sign. Now wolves are another story.

    Default Etolin Bull Elk/Zarembo no-go 09

I spoke to the biologist and he shut down Zarmebo b/c the numbers were down after a high success rate last year. He is letting them stabilize for a while. I actually drew the bull elk in Etolin. My friend drew it last year and said it was a waste of time as did the biologist unless you are a glutton for punishment. He claimed it was easier to hunt boat due to the fact he had difficulty locating the approximate 84 elk on the island himself. I have this weird thought in my head I could do it as did my friend last year. What say you?

My friend had no success last year at all. Wilderness!

I have two sons that have cow elk tags on SW Afognak two weeks earlier also along with two mtn goats in Port Dick and two muskox at Nunivak this year. If we drop any hunts it would be Etolin in my estimation due to the low success rates. Unless I can find a great boat transporter in the area to take me around the coast until I spot one worthy.
