Thread: Unit 16B Baiters

    Default Unit 16B Baiters

Wanted to know what your black/griz ratios were during the baiting season for the 16B predator control area. We had two stations set up off the Big Su, about 5 miles south or the Yentna and about a mile up a slough. We were up to our necks in Grizzlies. My buddy did have one scraggely looking blackie come in.... but he bolted out before and shots could be fired.

For us, it was about 7/1 in favor of the brown ones during the couple of weekends we hunted it. I even walked in on one one night and he kindly escorted my son and I back to my boat! Nothing but the brown ones in the trail-cam either.

Any one else with similar results?

    Default Lots of Browns

I have 2 baits over in the Lewis River area. I've had pretty much nothing but browns on em. One was on my first bait from the get go. I didn't bait it back up for 2 weeks and he'd be back on it as soon as I rebaited it. Even brought his girlfriend back with him to showoff his barrel crushing skills.

It is a 55 gallon drum. It's only being held on to the chain by a thread of the metal of the barrel. He even bit a hole in it....the barrel. I tried to get even some.....spread some molasses on one of his crap piles he left.....got a pic of him sniffing it....was hoping he'd eat it.......LOL Here's a couple more pics of the brute.

This has nothing to do with ratios, but last year I heard 550 Black bears were taken out of 16B.

I also killed my brownie in 16B this spring.

Not 16B, but in 20B, I had more grizz than I could handle. At least 4-6 different ones. 196 pictures to go through. Not one black.

Three of us spent three days down the river. During that time we saw one set of Blackie prints. We had 3 sites out; one was completely destroyed by a Brown, 1 was never touched, and the third had the 1 set of small Blackie prints and a bunch of Brown prints. On a good note, we may have found a new bait? My buddy being a pack rat, left his bag/suitcase a ways down the trail after the handle brike on him. A huge Brown came in and wrecked havoc on it, the only action we saw in three days.

There seems to be way too many Browns in 16B. My buddies stand got anhilated by browns and so did my dads. Can't keep those **** things away.

And just think, there's a few on this forum that get all butt-hurt because a couple of brownies might end up in a snare over that way. Too funny. They should be snaring brown bears by the sound of it.

We saw two blackies at our stands but didnt hunt the last three weeks because those blackies went home with us. When we went in to pull the stands there were alot of sign and tracks around, but no brownie sightings.

I have no clue what the ratios are in 16B...I have spoken to guys who are not members of this website and they also were hit heavily by grizzlies. Fish & Game are allowing every black bear you see to be harvested in this unit under a predator control permit. I think they should allow grizzlies to be taken over bait. Maybe one griz every 2 or 4 years? I realize that 16B is a large area and the ratios will vary depending where you are hunting, but it does not make sense that they dont allow for a griz harvest over bait if the whole reason for the predator control harvest is to help the moose population.

In my opinion, and you know what they say about those....they're like a__holes.....everyone has one.......fin n feather should let residents take one brown over bait in the spring in 16B. I know this will upset the guides or so I have been told but I think something has to be done to get their numbers in check. It's not just the blackies that are taking moose calfs. I got close to a thousand pics this spring alone from my 2 stands and more then 3/4 of those were of several different browns. My 2 bits for what it's worth. Couple of pics from my second stand....another brown

What few blacks I did have come in looked terrible as in the pics below. Only had 4 or 5 that looked any good. Even some of the browns looked like this. Had one black that looked real nice on one side and the other was about void of fur.

The guides and outfitters would cause a ruckuss if that happened though. I would like to see it happen though. Waaayyy too many Browns over there. That's why there isn't jack for moose even though they opened up the season over there.
