    Default seals on Deshka

While fishing the Deshka this year we watched a Seal right at the confluence constantly eating kings.. It would never come up with a whole fish just chunks..
Seen one King caught that had a chunk bit out of it and still bleeding..
This went on for atleast 4 days, And folks told us that the seal had been there for more than a week before we got there..
This is the first time i have ever seen this,, Is this a common thing to see a seal this far up river??
Also makes me wonder how much damage him and his buddies are doing to the runs..

    Default Deshka Seal

Did F&G ticket him for exceeding the limit and wanton waste?

    Default seals

Me and my bud saw 2 seals about 1 mile above the deshka landing in main channel of big Su last fall, while we were moose hunting.

I never considered shooting them... are they legal?

Not unless you are native. They are protected under the marine mamal protection act.
It ain't about the # of pounds of meat we bring back, nor about how much we spent to go do it. Its about seeing what no one else sees.

Sure don't sound like it's nothing new.. Seems like it would be tough for him to see well enough to catch fish in the big Su..

    Default Don't know about Deshka...

... but seals have been noted in Kenai Lake, and there is a resident bunch in Lake Illiamna. They're opportunists... just like us.

We saw one sunning himself on a sandbar on the Yentna two years ago, had to do a double take when we went by!

I prefer sea kittens. They don't have that fishy aftertaste and they go great with hush puppies.

    Default seals

Have seen over a dozen at a time haul out near the mouth of the Yentna in July and early Aug.
We ran fish wheels for ADFG and it was amazing how many salmon were "seal bitten". Surely they were not destined for the spawning grounds. all species caught in the wheels were effected although we did not see many Kings it hard to know if they were as well. Not sure but they can probably hear them swimming and can feel them with their whiskers when they close.
Also those fish tend to run near the banks and along bars in that silty water so they are some what concentrated.

    Default Notify a F&G biologist

You may want to notify the AK F&G Biologist in Palmer so they are aware
of the negative impact on the fishery.
How stupid is it to be wasting tons of salmon and halibut as bycatch in the Bering Sea and then have the coastal villages hollaring they have no food? It's got to stop!

I believe what you saw was actually a river wookie. Gadgum things keep getting into my garbage cans during the winter months.
